Ohio Rail Safety by the Numbers
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) monitors rail transportation and safety in Ohio. Federal, state and locally-funded safety upgrades, in addition to increased education, significantly lowered the number of train-vehicle crashes at Ohio public highway-rail grade crossings -- from 123 in 2001 to 67 in 2024. Per the PUCO, many of these crashes occurred because of motorist actions including failure to stop, driving around the gates or stopping/stalling on the tracks.Â
